It’s Friday I’m Not An Influencer: Influencer misogyny, AI Labelling and Authenticity

Why has “influencer” become such a dirty word?

This week on Friday I’m in Bed, we’re talking about influencer misogyny, the backlash against women making money online, and why we seem so determined to decide whether someone is “authentic” or not.

We look at teenage TikTok sensation Ellie Ellis, who gained 750,000 followers in her first week before the reaction quickly turned from who is this girl? to accusations that she was a TikTok plant. Why are women influencers so often treated with suspicion, while men doing essentially the same thing are more likely to be called experts?

Then we get into AI labelling and the increasingly blurry line between AI-generated content and simply using AI as a tool. If you use Canva to remove someone from the background of a photo, or AI to rephrase a sentence, does that make the finished thing “AI generated”? And if everything online ends up with an AI label, will we eventually stop caring?

Plus, running snobs are cancelled, authenticity is apparently very complicated, and we ask the important question: does Joe Public actually care what was made by AI?
